The Athenian Riviera

How To Spend One Day in Vouliagmeni

Set along the Athenian Riviera, Vouliagmeni is renowned for its luxurious atmosphere and breathtaking natural beauty. This exclusive seaside town, located just 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) south of Athens, is named after Lake Vouliagmeni, a stunning natural formation created centuries ago by a dramatic landslide. Today, the lake serves as a tranquil freshwater oasis, where visitors and locals alike can relax and experience its reputed healing properties. Vouliagmeni’s picturesque landscape is truly captivating, with its coastline graced by small coves, peninsulas, and crystal-clear waters that create a lace-like shoreline, enchanting all who visit.

Historically, Vouliagmeni has been a favored retreat for Athenians, offering lavish summer homes and luxury resorts. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after destinations along the Athenian Riviera, featuring world-class accommodations, from upscale boutique hotels to globally renowned establishments like the Four Seasons. Vouliagmeni is a year-round destination, though the summer months bring its beach activities to the forefront. The town is also a popular wedding destination, hosting numerous extravagant ceremonies during the warmer months.

For those seeking the perfect blend of natural beauty, high-end leisure, and a touch of Greek charm, Vouliagmeni is the ideal place to spend a day—or even use as a base for your Athens getaway. If you’ve already explored Athens’ iconic tourist attractions, staying in Vouliagmeni offers a smart alternative with a more relaxed vibe.

Here’s how to spend a perfect day in this coastal paradise.

Getting to Vouliagmeni from Athens International Airport

Vouliagmeni is easily accessible from both Athens city center and Athens International Airport, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend retreat. Here are the best options for getting there:

From Athens city center: Vouliagmeni is just a 20–30 minute drive (20 kilometers) south of the city center, depending on traffic, however if you are traveling during rush hour it can take up to 40 minutes or more. You can take a taxi, use a private transfer service, or take public transport which will take you a little longer. You could also catch the red Metro line to Elliniko (final stop) and from there take a taxi to Vouliagmeni (there is a taxi stand right outside the metro station). The metro ride takes roughly 20 minutes from Syntagma square. Note that Uber works as a taxi app in Athens, alternatively you can download FREENOW app

By Taxi or Private Transfer from Athens International Airport: The most convenient way to reach Vouliagmeni from the airport is by taxi or pre-booked private transfer. The ride takes approximately 25–30 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs around €35–€50. This is a great option if you’re carrying luggage or want a seamless travel experience. Taking a metro is a much longer route and is completely out of the way. For a seamless experience you can pre-book your taxi with Welcome Pickups, you can also check exactly how much you will be paying directly on the website.

By Public Transport: If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can take the X96 bus from the airport, which operates 24/7. The bus journey takes around 45–60 minutes, and tickets cost €6. Once you reach the Vouliagmeni stop PIGADAKIA, you’ll be just a short distance from the town’s main attractions however if you are traveling with luggage I would advise against it. If you opt for this option you can catch a taxi to your accommodation, but if you want to save yourself from hassle just opt for taking a taxi directly from the airport.

By Car: Renting a car is another good option if you prefer flexibility and plan to explore the broader Athenian Riviera. Vouliagmeni is about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) south of the airport, and the route offers scenic views along the coast.
